FREE AND EASY WAY TO REMEMBER THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INSIDE SIXTH AND AN OUTSIDE SIXTH
All you have to do is consider where the sixth is:
· if you’re dealing with an inside sixth, that means the sixth is inside the object, so therefore the object is divided into six parts, and so the sixth is 1/6th of the original object.
· If you’re dealing with an outside sixth, then the sixth is outside the object and therefore the object itself is divided into only 5 parts so that the sixth that is “outside” of it adds to it to make 6 parts, and therefore each part is only 1/5th of the original object.
For example, if something is worth 60, an inside sixth is 10 and outside sixth is 12, as follows:
Inside sixth: (put the sixth inside):
(divide the object into 6) 60¸6=10.
Outside sixth (put the sixth outside):
(divide the object into 5) 60¸5=12.
