ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF SOME OF THE ABOVE AND OTHER QUOTATIONS
· (Niddah 30b) The fetus does not go out [from it’s mother’s womb] until they make it take an oath…. And what is the oath that they make it take: you will be a tzaddik and you will not be a rasha (wicked person) and even if the whole world calls you tzaddik you will be in your own eyes like a rasha. (Maharshah: And what is the oath… that against his will they say to him, “Be a tzaddik. In the world to which you are going, be a tzaddik as you were in your mother’s womb. As you were prepared and free there to learn Torah, so you should be from now on. And don’t be seduced by the yetzer horrah and to the side of tumah - the left side - that will come to you at the time of your birth but see that your soul will remain in purity like it was given to you from Hakadosh Baruch Hu, Who is pure and Whose servants are pure.”)
· (Maharal, Chiddushei Hagaddos, Niddah 30b, s.v. V'omar) The whole of the oath is clinging to Hashem.... And this is the oath, that he won't turn away from Hashem."
· (Shacharis, as the Torah is being carried to be read) …and let me be counted among the tzaddikim.
· (Yoma 38b) And Rabbi Chiya, the son of Abba, said that Rabbi Yochanan said, Hakadosh Baruch Hu saw that tzaddikim were few, [so] He stood and planted them in every generation.
· (Yoma 38b) And Rabbi Elazar said, The world was created even for the sake of one tzaddik, as it says (Bereishis 1:4), “And Hashem saw the light that it was good,” and there is no ‘good’ except a tzaddik, as it says (Yishayahu [Isaiah] 3:10), “Say of the tzaddik that he is good.” (Maharsha, s.v. bishvil: …because the purpose of its [the world’s] creation is the Hidden Light for the tzaddikim in the World To Come.)
· (Menachos 29b) Why was the World To Come created with a yud (the smallest letter), because tzaddikim in it are few.
· (Yoma 29a) Rabbi Elazar said… all the time that tzaddikim increase (persist) in prayer, their prayers are heard.
· (Zohar, parshah Vayichi, 245b) …because Hashem takes delight only in the souls of tzaddikim.
· (Maharal, Yevamos 64a) …because the prayer of the tzaddik clings to complete compassion, and therefore the prayer of tzaddikim changes the characteristic of Hashem from the middah of strict judgment to complete compassion. And it is not so with other people - even though Hashem fulfills their requests and prayers, the middah of cruelty is not changed to the middah of compassion, rather this thing is done through the prayer of tzaddikim, because their prayer reaches until complete compassion. And understand this very much.
· (Noam Elimelech, parshas Mikeitz, s.v. Oh yomar) There are many types of tzaddikim and no one is similar to the next.
