THE GRATITUDE BOOK
Formalize your gratitude to Hashem.
The Gratitude Book is a book of blank, lined pages which helps you to formalize and remember how grateful you really are to Hashem for all the billions of things that He does for you.
The Gratitude Book is arranged in 3 sections:
1. The first section is the “I Am Grateful For All These Things That Hashem Has Done For Me” section, in which you list all the things that Hashem has done for you for which you are grateful.
2. The second section is the “I Am Grateful For All These Things That Hashem Has NOT Caused To Happen To Me” section.
Printed diagonally across each page of this second section is the warning:
ONLY THINK THESE THINGS - DON’T WRITE THEM DOWN - SO AS NOT TO GIVE A “PISCHON PEH” (an opening of the mouth) TO THE yetzer hora AND REMIND IT WHAT IT COULD DO TO YOU, CHAS V'SHALOM.1
3. The third section is the “Gam Zu L’Tovah” section (see our related product idea, The Prognosticator), in which you enter all those things that are happening to you or to others that seem bad to you that they’re happening, along with the date (so you can see how long it took for you to realize that what was happening was really for the good, at which point you can add it to the first section).
We here at The Geulah Company have found that by actually repeatedly thanking Hashem for the things that we enter into this “Gam Zu L’Tovah” section (even though we don’t really mean it) helps to shorten the time that it takes for us to realize that they really are for the best. (For further elaboration of this principle, see our related essay, “Good!”)
When you first get The Gratitude Book enter as many things as you can think of. Then, at the end of each day, enter all the things that you are grateful to Hashem for His having done for you that day. You’ll find that after just a few days you’ll have hundreds of entries, if not thousands or more, of things that you are grateful for (especially if you include those things from the second and third sections).
Then any time you, chas v'shalom, are feeling down, or worried, or feel distant from Hashem, or doubt His attention to you or His intentions, just look in The Gratitude Book and realize how grateful and happy you really are.
1 (Berachos 19a) Because Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish said, and so it was taught in the name of Rabbi Yosi: A person should never open his mouth to the Satan.
