EITZ HaCHAIM THOUGHT GUARDER
(See our companion product, The Thinking-In-Learning-Room Picture.)
Reminds you to think in learning.
When Hashem told Adam HaRishon not to eat from the Eitz HaDaas Tov v’Rah (The Tree of Good and Evil) it was because, apparently, He didn’t want people filling their minds with matters that are associated with good and evil. Rather, it would seem, He only wanted people to have their minds filled with thoughts of Hashem, His wonders and His Torah (symbolized by the Eitz HaChaim - The Tree of Life). And such was the way it was for the first man until he ate from the Eitz HaDaas Tov v’Rah. As soon as he did, however, his mind became filled with “this worldly” matters, and consequently, being able to think of Hashem, His wonders and His Torah became something which required effort. And such is our present condition.
The Eitz HaChaim Thought Guarder, even though it’s not something that you will want to be seen wearing in public, can nevertheless help you to train yourself to divert your thoughts away from matters of the Eitz HaDaas Tov v’Rah and to direct them onto matters of the Eitz HaChaim. It consists of a section of soft-plastic chain-link fencing suspended a few inches in front of your face (the “fence” is attached to an adjustable headband).
Since you feel enclosed while wearing it, it constantly reminds you to keep your thoughts on Eitz HaChaim matters (words of Torah and thoughts of Hashem) rather than letting them stray to Eitz HaDaas Tov v’Rah matters (mundane, every day matters, worries and concerns). When you realize that your thoughts have left the Eitz HaChaim “enclosure” and that you’re thinking Eitz HaDaas Tov v’Rah matters, you switch them to back Eitz HaChaim matters, and then all is well again.
Some of the thoughts that are classified as Eitz HaDaas Tov v’Rah thoughts are:
·Remembering events that have happened to you, either pleasant or unpleasant.
·Trying to figure out why something unpleasant happened to you and bringing up the feelings that the event caused in you.
·Thinking of a problem you have with someone.
·Thinking of one of your own internal problems.
·Remembering one of your failures, blunders or disappointments.
·Remembering rejections, slights and affronts that people have given you.
·Thinking how you can justify your side in an argument that you are having or that you had some time ago.
·Being worried about something that might happen or about the actual or possible effects of something that has already happened.
·Thinking of a conversation you had or would like to have with someone.
·Just thinking of any of a variety of relatively unimportant or insignificant non-Torah-related things that you have on your mind.
When you realize that your mind is caught thinking one of the above Eitz HaDaas Tov v’Rah thoughts, switch it to think one of the following Eitz HaChaim thoughts:
· Remember gemora sugyas or divrei Torah that you’ve learned.
· Apply an appropriate halachah or mussar vort to the event that you’re thinking about.
· Try to figure out Hashem’s hand in the matter and what you can learn from it.
· Instead of thinking of a problem you have with someone else or with yourself, think of a problem you have understanding a gemora, Rashi, Tosafos, etc.

· (Rashi, Devorim 32:46) A person needs to have his eyes and his heart and his ears directed toward words of Torah.
·(Sfas Emes, Pesach Hagadah, s.v. V’es hamateh hazeh) Because Hashem’s will is that a person should be attached to the Eitz HaChaim, the way of the Torah, the Inner conduct. And if it wasn’t for the sin [of Adam HaRishon], it wouldn’t be that all of nature prevents a person. And through the sin of the Eitz HaDaas, the punishment was that one cannot cling to the Eitz HaChaim until he rectifies it through natural means.
· (Beir HaGra, Even HaEzer, siman 25, s’if katan 5) Everyone who puts words of Torah on his heart, abolishes from himself thoughts of the yetzer horrah and thoughts of immorality; and everyone who does not put words of Torah on his heart, they give him all the thoughts of the yetzer horrah and thoughts of immorality.
· (Rambam, Moreh Nevuchim, Section 3, ch. 51, s.v. Ha’arah halo) …when you turn your thoughts to a required food or required matter, you have already interrupted this attachment that was between you and Hashem, be He blessed, and you are not with Him then and also He is not with you, because this relationship which was between you and Him is already interrupted in actuality at this time.
· (Rabbeinu Gershom, Bava Basra 7b, s.v. Ani Chomah) …this is the Torah, which guards those who learn it like a wall which guards the people of the city.

· (Sfas Emes, parshas Ki Sisa, year 639, s.v. B’Rashi) And certainly one’s will needs to be with a good eye and the desire to publicize the honor of Hashem, be He blessed, but when they see the abundant concealments and the powers of the Sitra Achra that rule in the World of Falsehood, they necessarily need to conduct themselves with concealment and in modesty.
… ....The Other Side Of The Coin… ….
· (Kli Yakar, parshas Terumah, s.v. V’asoo aron) And though it is that not every person is ready to learn Torah, nevertheless there is a side in every person where it can be that his portion is in the Torah. Because even if he isn’t prepared to learn, nevertheless he can strengthen the hands of those learning Torah, and he will be considered as if he is learning it, like Yissachar and Zevulun.
