THE TALKING DIVEIKUS MACHINE

Helps you get closer to Hashem.
The Talking Diveikus Machine is a small black box, which emits a mechanically altered male voice saying short phrases which make you think of Hashem.

You can choose for the messages to be spoken either at random times (varying from a few seconds to many minutes apart), one every three minutes, or continuously (one shortly after the next).  In addition, there is a button to press to replay the last message, and one to hear the next message (when you don’t want to wait).  All the messages are printed on the box with an explanation of what the machine does, so that people can know what they’re getting into before buying it.
The messages are also available as a tape or MP3 so you can play it manually on your stereo or MP3 player, or as a computer program which will interrupt you with thoughts of Hashem while you’re using your computer (to help protect against the dangers of computer usage).

As can be seen from the list of the messages that follows, they are mostly ideas with which you are already familiar, because the purpose of the machine is more to remind than to educate - and by reminding, to help you get closer to Hashem.
PLEASE NOTE:  Imagine that you’ve set the machine on “random play” and that you’re hearing each phrase one by one, each one coming some varying time period after the last message, when you don’t expect it.  You’ve forgotten the last message and you’re preoccupied with what you’re now doing and suddenly you hear a short beep, followed by the next message.  Hearing messages like these in this way, over a period of time, will train your mind to think of Hashem even when you’re away from the machine.  (When you read these messages, try to pause for as long as possible after each one, for they lose some of their impact when read one after another.)
In addition, if changing your “heart of stone” into a “heart of flesh” is something you’ve been trying to do, you’ll find that actually doing what these messages tell you to do will help you in your effort. (See quotations about a heart of stone at bottom of the page.)

THE MESSAGES:

Thank Hashem for 6 things right now.
Hashem fills the world and the room that you are now in.  Do you know how He does that?
Hashem likes it when you try to get closer to Him.
It’s not nice to pay no attention to Hashem when He’s right there next to you - you wouldn’t like it if someone did it to you.
Everything that Hashem created, He created for His own honor and glory: so that He would be honored and glorified through it.  So any time you use anything of what Hashem created, honor and glorify Him through your use of it, because that’s why He created it.
Hashem is hiding and wants you to find Him, if you could say such a thing.
Say something nice to Hashem right now.
Hashem is here.  Say hello to Him.
Tell Hashem you love Him.
Hashem is in charge.
Talk to Hashem many times every day.
Think of Hashem right now.
Praise Hashem for how giving He is.
Hashem is always with you.
May you get more enjoyment talking to Hashem during davening than you do talking to your closest friend.
When you see something amazing that Hashem has created, praise Him for it and tell Him how amazing it is.
Hashem’s motto “gam zu l’tovah”: “This too will be fine.”
The yetzer hora’s motto is, “What’s the difference?!!  What does it matter?!!”
Since Hashem is everywhere, every time you are anywhere, think of Hashem, because He’s there too.
Hashem is good to everyone, even to people you don’t like.
No matter who your best friend is, Hashem is a better friend.
Hashem wants you to think of Him.
Hashem creates the world anew every moment.  Do you know how He does that?
Ask Hashem for something right now.
Hashem created water so that He would be honored and glorified through it.  So any time you use any water, honor and glorify Hashem through your use of it, for that’s why He created it.
Hashem is amazing.
Hashem usually grants the wishes of His tzaddikim.
May you have
Hashem can do whatever He wants.
Do something to get closer to Hashem.
Hashem is close to the brokenhearted.
Hashem likes it when you think of Him.
Hashem is frightening.
Hashem knows all your thoughts.  Do you know how He does that?
Hashem gave us the Torah.  Realize that.
Hashem has created amazing things.
Hashem makes you suffer so that you’ll think of Him, and the Baal Shem Tov said that Hashem makes you suffer until you think of Him.
Hashem helps everyone, even people you might rather that He didn’t help.
The more often you think of Hashem, the more He likes you.
Whenever Hashem fulfills any of your requests, no matter how small, praise Him for His ability to manipulate the world and the people in it.
Think of Hashem the next time you make a berachah.
Hashem makes everything turn out fine.
What’s Hashem’s part in what you were just doing?
Thank Hashem for always being with you.
Thank Hashem for 20 things right now.
Hashem stands by you even when no one else will.
If you were thinking of Hashem you probably wouldn’t have been thinking what you were just thinking.
Hashem created electricity so that He would be honored and glorified through it.  So any time you use any electricity,
honor and glorify Hashem through your use of it, for that’s why He created it.
What’s Hashem’s role in what just happened to you?
Were you just thinking of Hashem?
Hashem knows what you are doing even when you are all alone.  Do you know how He does that?
Thank Hashem for loving you.
What’s Hashem’s role in what you were just thinking?
May you be aware of Hashem in everything you do.
Hashem has no body and yet look at all that He can do.
Did you think of Hashem many times yesterday?
When you talk to Hashem do you hear an answer?
Think of Hashem while you are talking to other people.
Talk to Hashem in place of talking to yourself.
Talk to Hashem during Shemoneh Esrei.
Instead of discussing something with yourself, discuss it with Hashem.
Hashem is your best friend.
Hashem has something nice in store for you.
Hashem is with you every step of your way.
When you see your enemy, think of Hashem instead of your enemy.
Think of Hashem a lot of times today.
Hashem controls everything that happens.  Do you know how He does that?
The nicer you are to Hashem, the more He likes you.
May you have complete kavannah during all of Asher Yotzar, every time you say it.
Hashem does things so you’ll think of Him.
If after learning Torah you feel no closer to Hashem than when you started, you didn’t learn the way you should have learned.
Hashem is your partner in everything you do.
Hashem created trees so that He would be honored and glorified through them.  So any time you use anything that comes from a tree, honor and glorify Hashem through your use of it, for that’s why He created them.
Some of the frustrations you had today were caused by Hashem only to let you know that He is the boss and not you.
If you are suffering too much, tell Hashem and see how He’ll lighten your load.
If after davening you feel no closer to Hashem than when you started, you didn’t pray the way you should have prayed.
As soon as you wake up, thank Hashem for 5 things.
Hashem is more important than anyone: past, present or future.
It’s realistic to see Hashem’s hand in everything.
Can you tell the difference between what Hashem wants and what the yetzer hora wants?
May you have complete kavannah during all of Birchas HaMazon, every time you say it.
The pain you feel brings you closer to Hashem.
Ask Hashem to help you appreciate Him more.
Hashem builds you up and then knocks you down, builds you up and then knocks you down, builds you up and then knocks you down, until you finally hopefully give in to Him completely.
Before you start davening, thank Hashem for 5 things; when you get to Ashrei, thank Him silently for 2 things; when you get to Shemoneh Esrei, thank Him silently for 3 things; and when you finish davening, thank Him for 1 thing.
Ask Hashem for something right now.
Even though Hashem is invisible and can’t be seen, when you look at other people try to see Hashem in them.
Hashem created plastic so that He would be honored and glorified through it.  So any time you use anything made of plastic, honor and glorify Hashem through your use of it, for that’s why He created it.
Before each davening say, “Ribono Shel Olum, make me get closer to You through this davening and You get closer to me through this davening.”
Before each time you learn Torah say, “Ribono Shel Olum, make me get closer to You through this learning and You get closer to me through this learning.”
A lot of what Hashem does He does so you’ll be in fear and awe of Him.
Think of Hashem with everything you do.
Ask Hashem to help you to get closer to Him.
Ask Hashem to help you see His hand in what happens to you.
Hashem often answers the prayers of people who are seriously trying to get closer to Him.
By thinking of Hashem you can bring Him out of hiding, if you could say such a thing.

Try to give more of your attention to Hashem.  He deserves it.
Hashem gave you the yetzer hora so that you could learn what not to do - not only in theory but also in action.
Hashem knows where you are even when no one else does.  Do you know how He does that?
Realize that all the words that you say in davening are the exact words that Hashem wants you to say to Him every day; and that He made sure that the men who wrote the prayers wrote those exact words, so that you would say those exact words to Him every day - because those are the exact words that He wants you to say to Him every day.  So say them, to Him, every day, exactly how He wants you to say them to Him.
May you have complete kavannah during all of Shemoneh Esrei, every time you say it.
Hashem created the earth so that He would be honored and glorified through it.  So anytime you use the earth in any way, honor and glorify Hashem through your use of it, for that’s why He created it.
Try to think of Hashem more often than you already do.
Thank Hashem for 3 things right now.
Try to see Hashem’s hand in what’s happening to you now.
What does Hashem want you to do?
Praise Hashem for how concerned He is.
Hashem made everything very complicated but He could have made everything very simple.
Before you do anything say, “Ribono Shel Olum, make me get closer to You through my .... and You get closer to me through my ....” and fill in the blank with what you are about to do.
Hashem made people in His own image.  People like their presence to be recognized only because Hashem likes His presence to be recognized, if you could say such a thing.
Hashem is tolerant of people who are mean or cruel or stingy or full of hate.  But not forever.
Hashem is also tolerant of people who steal or cheat or lie or take advantage of people weaker than themselves.  But not forever.
Hashem created people so that He would be honored and glorified through them.  So any time you use a person in any way, honor and glorify Hashem through your use of that person, for that’s why Hashem created him.
Some of what Hashem does is to see if you’ll still believe in Him afterwards.
One of the benefits of being old is that it becomes easier to think of Hashem.
The Baal Shem Tov said that Hashem puts all your thoughts into your mind - the good thoughts and the bad thoughts -  and that He puts them there for a reason.
Before taking out the garbage say, “Ribono shel olum, make me get closer to You through my taking out this garbage and You get closer to me through my taking out this garbage.”
May you have complete kavannah during all of Shacharis, every morning.
Thank Hashem for how tolerant He is.
See if you can think only of Hashem during one short berachah, from beginning to end -- then see if you can do it during “Asher Yotzar.”
Hashem cares what you do even when no one else does.
Every time Hashem does something nice for you, make sure you become and remain smaller and more submissive to Him.  Otherwise He might take it away.
Think of things you can do to be nicer to Hashem.
Thank Hashem every time you think of Him.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF SOME RELEVANT QUOTATIONS
· (Succah 52a)  R’ Avira explained - some say it was R’ Yehoshua, the son of Levi: The yetzer hora has seven names….  Yechezkiel called it “stone,” as it is said (Yechezkiel 36:26), “And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and I will give you a heart of flesh.”

· (Rav Dessler, Michtav Mei'Eliyahu, vol. 2, p. 243)  The specific name of Hashem [yud-kei-vuv-kei] which was engraved on the staff [of Moshe Rabbeinu] hints at the true, deep thought of l’shmah: having intention just to the name of Hashem alone.  An intention like this is able to break through the barrier of timtum (obstruction, dullness) and pierce through a heart of stone.
