THE DISCONNECTOR
Decrease your connection to your yetzer horrah.
.jpg)
Probably the yetzer hora’s greatest, trickiest and most skillful weapon is to make you think that its thoughts are actually your thoughts.
Most of the time it is probably very difficult for you, if not next to impossible, to realize that a certain thought that you’re thinking is really the yetzer hora’s thought and not your own, and the only reason you’re thinking it is because the yetzer hora is making you think it. That’s because the yetzer hora is an expert at being able to get you to completely and 100% identify with its thoughts and to get you to actually believe and agree with the things that it is making you think.
The Disconnector can help you disconnect yourself from the thoughts that your yetzer hora is making you think.
The Disconnector is a small, handheld computer that lists just about all the thoughts that the yetzer hora can get a person to think. By either searching through its menus and submenus or by entering a key word or two, you can locate the thought that you’re thinking and find out if it is actually coming from the yetzer hora.
If you find that the thought that you’re thinking or one similar to it is listed, you can be sure that it’s the yetzer hora who’s actually doing the thinking. If you don’t find your thought listed, you can be almost sure that it’s not coming from the yetzer hora.
Once you know that a certain thought is actually coming from the yetzer hora, every time you think that thought in the future you can remind yourself that it’s really the yetzer hora who’s making you think it and you can respectfully1 disconnect yourself from the thought and from the yetzer hora by saying something like, “That’s the yetzer hora thinking that thought and not me,” or “Look, yetzer hora, if you want to think thoughts like that there’s nothing I can do about it, but I don’t want to think them anymore,” or something similar.
After saying things like that every time you think the thought, you’ll find it will become progressively easier for you to disconnect yourself from the thought and no longer think it. You can let the yetzer hora think it and you can go on your own merry little way without that thought influencing you any longer. By applying this technique with each troublesome thought that you have, over time and b’ezras Hashem, you will be able to extricate yourself from the clutches of the yetzer hora’s trickiest weapon, baruch Hashem.
The Disconnector is also available in booklet form.
1 We say “respectfully” because the yetzer hora is a most formidable adversary, stronger even than you, and, as Chazal tell us, if it wasn’t for the fact that Hashem helps you in your battle against it, you’d never be able to overpower it. Therefore, when fighting the yetzer hora head on it is best to be respectful of its power and abilities.

SELECTED RELEVANT QUOTATIONS FROM SEFORIM HAKEDOSHIM
ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE ABOVE QUOTATIONS
· (Succah 52a) As Rabbi Yehudah explained: In the World To Come, HaKadosh Baruch Hu will bring the yetzer horrah and slaughter it before the tzaddikim and before the rishoyim. It appears to the tzaddikim as a high mountain and it appears to the rishoyim like a strand of hair. These [the tzaddikim] cry and these [the rishoyim] cry. Tzaddikim cry and say, “How were we able to subdue a high mountain like this?” and the rishoyim cry and say, “How were we not able to subdue this strand of hair (Maharsha, there, s.v. haich: There is to answer [why the tzaddikim will cry] according to that which is written, “And Hashem saw all that He made and behold it was very good, etc.” (Bereishis 1:31), that this is the yetzer horrah etc. This means that it [the yetzer horrah] is good for tzaddikim because through the fact that they are victorious over it they merit to The World To Come. Therefore, they are upset with its slaughtering and its abolishment because they can no longer merit through it…. And it is fine that they cry on the merit that is taken from them with its abolishment.)
· (Aruch LaNer, Succah 52a, s.v. shivah) Even the holy and pure thoughts that already came to the heart of a person, the yetzer horrah makes tamei; and this is why Dovid [HaMelech] called it “tamei.”
· (Aruch LaNer, Succah 52a, s.v. shivah) …[because the yetzer horrah] is hidden inside the heart of a person until he doesn’t sense it at all or recognize it, even if it already made him sin, for sometimes he thinks that he is doing a mitzvah and he doesn’t know that the advice of the yetzer horrah is mixed into it. Therefore, one needs great guarding and examining to recognize the hidden action of the yetzer horrah. And this is why Yoail called it “tzafoni [hidden].”
· (Maharal, Nesivas Olum, Nasiv Coach HaYetzer, ch. 2, s.v. haadom) And there is an untold thing concerning the power of the yetzer horrah, which is the power of the Satan, and the power of the Angel of Death - that this power is not something natural which is under the sun, rather its power comes from the power which is above the sun; and because of this, it is said of the yetzer horrah that it renews itself on a person every day, for everything whose power comes from an upper level that is above nature is called that it renews itself every day. Understand this very well and you will understand the power of the yetzer horrah.
