SELECTED RELEVANT QUOTATIONS FROM SEFORIM HAKEDOSHIM
ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF SOME OF THE ABOVE AND OTHER QUOTATIONS
· (Moed Katan 17a, Chagiga 16a) It was taught, Rabbi Iloy says, if a person sees that his yetzer hora is overpowering him, he should go to a place where people don’t recognize him and put on black clothing and wrap himself in black and do what his heart desires, but he should not desecrate the Name of Heaven in public.
· (Orech Lanair, Yevamos 60b, s.v. b’gemora v’amar) …and therefore it appears better that which the Shlah answered that [the gemora’s advice to] reprove someone until he hits you, is when the person who is sinning knows that he is sinning, but when he contradicts that this is not a sin at all, in this case it is a mitzvah to not say anything [in reproof], because it won’t be heard.
· (Baal Shem Tov on the Torah, parshas Bereishis, not 128, s.v. u’mah, from the sefer K’tunas Pasim) If the yetzer hora were to come on a person in the form of an old king, that would be fine, because when a person knows that it is the yetzer hora, he definitely will not sin in this.
· (Rav Dessler, Michtav Mi'Eliyahu, vol. 3, p. 289) …because a person will not in any way do what he knows in truth and in clarity that it is bad.
· (Rav Dessler, Michtav Mei'Eliyahu, vol. 3, p. 28) The truth is completely hidden from a person at the time that the yetzer hora rules over him.
· (Rav Dessler, Michtav Mei'Eliyahu, vol. 3, p. 50) The Rebbe Mendel from Vitebsk, zt”l, wrote in his letters that it is tried and true that as soon as the Satan comes on a person, if the person looks at him as if he were someone all of whose intentions were the exact opposite of what he said (for example, two people who agreed between themselves that every time they said “yes” their intention was to “no”, and vice versa), then it would be very easy to overpower him [the yetzer hora], because since all his words are truly the opposite, it is possible to find the truth by inverting his words.
